The power to believe is one of the most powerful things in the world. It determines the direction of our lives, because ultimately, what we believe in our hearts affects everything we do. Therefore, when the devil wants to derail us, he doesn’t take control of our lives and destroys it, he merely tries to influence what we believe and cause us to doubt what God said.
When we believe God and His Word, we believe in His character. Romans states that if we declare with our mouths, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in our hearts that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved (Romans 10:9). We are not saved by what we do, but we are saved by what we believe.
Our faith is determined by what we hear (Romans 10:17). Now, the writer of Hebrews encourages us to pay careful attention the Word of God, so that we don’t misunderstand what we hear and cause us to drift away (Hebrews 2:1). The problem is that we lend our ears to so many outside sources that we delay what we should already understand.
Having a misunderstanding of God’s Word and what is holy, changes our actions and can cause us to miss out on what God has for us. What is holy must be revered as such (Hebrews 10:29). When we dilute the Word, we also lose the effect thereof. As ambassadors of Heaven, it is our responsibility to ensure that we understand scripture.
